ILP Design

I created a brief Prezi that would be a visual aid for a lecture presentation. My intended audience for this Prezi would be in an educational setting for a college Elementary Japanese class at level one. Since it is intended for college students I tried to maintain a professional looking design. Prezis are great to use as a visual aid because it really captures the audience's attention due to its unique format.

ILP Participation

I did a tutorial on Lynda.com

1) Activity Log

  • Introduction
  • Overview of Prezi
  • Getting Started
  • Working with Basic Content
  • Arranging and Zooming
  • Working with Multimedia elements
  • Presenting Your Prezi
  • Sharing and Publishing your Prezi
  • Conclusion
2) Learning Experience

Prior to taking this tutorial I had never used Prezi before and this really helped me. Prezi is a great tool to use in the classroom because the format is aesthetically pleasing and easy for the audience to follow. The non linear format is especially interesting since most people are used to a traditional PowerPoint presentations. I found the tutorial extremely useful because I was having issues inserting an image since I wasn't used to the layout.

As a teacher I would use Data Collection tools to improve my class. If I was a teacher I would probably teach high school English. I would use a survey to find out which part of the class the students enjoyed and which part that they think can be improved. The survey would be anonymous so students wouldn't feel like they had to hide their true opinions.

One of the topics that I found interesting on my classmates' blogs was that we all had different goals to accomplish. For instance, some people want to be  kindergarten teachers and I know another student who wants to be a special education teacher. It's great that we can take the skills that we learn from this class and apply it to whatever field we eventually end up in.

The next technology related skill that I would like to learn next would be how to use a smart board. I chose this because I know that they were already being used in classrooms before I graduated high school and they are becoming more common. I feel like it will soon be an essential skill to have.

A way that I could fulfill my goals would be practicing in the Tech Sandbox. Also, I could learn new skills by interning in a high school classroom. One of the best ways to get better with technological advances is to rely on the skills that I already have.

The "flipped classroom" is a term used to describe a classroom where the typical elements of lectures and homework are flipped. I actually had a flipped classroom in high school. My psychology teacher started posting video lectures on YouTube and we used class time for discussions, note taking, or individual studies. Sometimes it worked really well because we could have in depth discussions about topics that were more difficult instead of going over all of the topics. However, a lot of times it didn't work out because people would just get off task and not do work during the individual study time.

A web-based resource that I would use is   http://news.nationalgeographic.com/. I could use this to show students articles that relate to the curriculum. I would have the students read the article while filling out a handout that I would make based on the information found in the article. In the handout I would include space to take notes and at the end there would be discussion questions.

I learned how to use hyperlinks to link parts within the document. I also learned how to embed an audio clip in a slide. I really enjoyed this assignment because it allowed me to add a lot of different creative elements to my interactive quiz. It was kind of annoying to have to keep making different hyperlinks and it was really time consuming. Next time I will probably do more with the navigation and make the format less linear.

I think that online classes hold the most promise for education in the future. They are already being used today and they will continue to be used more often and more efficiently. Online classes are great for students because it caters to different speeds of learning and it helps people with different styles of learning. Moreover, they are necessary for students that are physically incapable of being in a classroom.

I think I'm on the side of the digital divide that is more technologically advanced. I've always had access to computers and I've taken multiple computer classes. There are bound to be students in my classroom who do not have the access or skills that match the other students. The best way to bridge the gap is to use technology in the classroom that the students can learn from.

I learned about how to use PowerPoint for educational purposes. I've used it before but I had to make my slide show while keeping in mind that it would be used as a visual aid for my students. I liked that the assignment made me use different aspects of PowerPoint that I wouldn't have thought of adding such as animations and transitions. I think that next time I will try to improve the way I present some of the information.

I chose to evaluate Mr. Bragg's 5th grade classroom at Butteville Union Elementary School website: http://ericbragg.wix.com/butteville
On the home page there is a huge photo of his fifth grade class, a brief description of "Mr. B", and pictures of their classroom projects. As you navigate the site you can see a page that is dedicated to projects. There is another tab where it gives you information of how to get involved. The next tabs have resources, photos and contact information.

I envision myself using classroom websites to get information out to my students' parents and to show pictures of our creative projects. I would also use educational websites as study aids and as an interactive way for my students to learn the course material. According to the podcast, traditionally teachers used to have to go to conferences and conventions to promote professional development but with technological advances teachers they can gain these professional advances while being more efficient and effective.

I gained a lot of new skills from working on the Wiki. By coming up with a form to evaluate websites it helped me to learn what I should be looking out for when I use sources in my own education. I also enjoyed working as a group. It was great to collaborate on this project and to see the finished product when we all put our work together.

Web 2.0 materials are very helpful in the classroom. There many different options and countless possibilities when it comes to using them for educational purposes. They are very useful because they help students interact with each other and collaborate on projects. Many of these tools can be accessed through the internet so students can use these programs on computers.

An interesting Web 2.0 tool that I found was Kidblog. This allows students to create their own blogs while the teacher has complete control of the site. It enables elementary and middle school students to create their own blog while in a safe environment that is monitored by the instructor.

Another reason that Kidblog is great is that it is very user friendly. It's simple structure makes it very easy for students to use. This is aspect is very important because not all students have the same abilities when it comes to technology so it is very important that they can use it. You can find out more information at http://kidblog.org/home/

I really enjoyed making the concept map. It was a great experience because it introduced a new way for me to display information. Concept maps ate a great way to organize ideas and arrange thoughts. Since, there are many different types of learners, teachers have to explore different ways of displaying facts and key ideas. I think that if I was used to the program, I would have made a better map. I definitely have room to improve.
